Department of Chemistry, X-ray Research Facilities

The X-Ray Research Facilities support the University of Chicago research by providing access to the state-of-the-art single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction facilities as well as X-ray photoelectron laboratory. We offer professional crystallographic advice and services to the members of the Department of Chemistry as well as to external members of the scientific community.

We perform routine and non-routine small-molecule single-crystal X-ray structure determination and X-ray powder diffraction analysis of a variety of small molecule samples. We also closely collaborate and conduct sophisticated X-ray diffraction experiments at Advanced Photon Source (Argonne National Laboratory). We utilize X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to analyze the surface chemistry (outer few nanometers) of solid materials and can identify the elemental composition along with the electronic and chemical states of each element in the surface.
